Profile Biography
I grew up in a small town in Arkansas, never dreaming that I would end up working at a University. I first became interested in fish ecology as an undergraduate at the University of Mississippi where I worked on schooling fish dynamics and published a paper with my advisor. I decided to pursue a graduate degree and found an assistantship working with cavefish and cave crayfish. I knew little about caves before I started my M.S. degree at the University of Arkansas but loved the research. My husband and I meet when I was an undergraduate at the University of Mississippi and we spent two years apart while I obtained my M.S. degree before getting married and deciding to pursue our PhDs at Southern Illinois University. We both work on fish so this made for a very interesting number of years as we learned to work together. I continued research on cavefish during my PhD and later as young faculty member at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA), eventually describing the unique fish I was working with as a new species. Since becoming a faculty member my research interests have encompassed a wide range of topics from invasive species to conservation to restoration. Many of these projects have been in collaboration with my husband. We had our first child while in graduate school and had the second while we were both working towards tenure at UCA. We have graduated over 18 graduate students from our lab and are continuing to do research we find exciting. My oldest child is not 12 and the youngest 9, they have grown up going into the field to do research and I can't think of a better way to raise them! I am lucky to be at a University that provides the flexibility to literally have it all. The kids keep us busy with sports, music and school activities but I find that I can balance all of these.
